LINCOLN - The Nebraska Department of Labor (NDOL) announced today that Nebraska’s preliminary unemployment rate for November 2021 is 1.8 percent, seasonally adjusted. The rate is down 0.1 percentage points from the October 2021 rate of 1.9 percent and down 1.6 percentage points from the November 2020 rate of 3.4 percent. Unemployment data goes back to 1976, and the November rate is the lowest on record for Nebraska and the nation.

The rate is a record low for Nebraska and tied with the nationwide record low. Unemployment data goes back to 1976, and only Hawaii (January 2020) and Connecticut (August 2020) have ever had rates this low. The forms are normally released in January, but the IRS granted the Department’s request for a 30-day delay while additional fraud checks were performed. The Nebraska Department of Labor is performing additional fraud checks to prevent Unemployment Insurance tax statements from being sent to identity theft victims. The IRS has granted the Department’s request to delay issuing 1099-G forms for up to 30 days while these checks are performed. As a result, some claimants will receive their 1099-G forms in February. The IRS will not begin processing individual tax returns until February 12.

The Nebraska Department of Labor (NDOL) is continuing to implement the Continued Assistance Act, the federal legislation that amends the unemployment benefit programs established under the CARES Act. NDOL anticipates that all of the amended CARES Act benefit programs will be fully implemented in approximately four-to-six weeks. The Continued Assistance Act stipulates changes to each of the CARES Act programs that require NDOL’s unemployment software vendor to perform system updates and changes.
