Nebraska Department of Labor Launches Rapid Reskilling and Reemployment Initiative to Support Dislocated Workers

Release Date: 10/30/2026

LINCOLN, NE — The Nebraska Department of Labor (NDOL) today announced the launch of the Nebraska Rapid Reskilling & Reemployment Initiative, a statewide effort designed to help workers who have been displaced by automation, technological change, or recent large‑scale layoffs quickly reconnect to quality jobs. The initiative focuses on accelerating reemployment while ensuring workers gain the skills required for Nebraska’s evolving economy.

“We don’t want to lose displaced workers to opportunities in other states. We want to give them the tools that will keep them here,” said Governor Jim Pillen. “This initiative is all about providing the skills, training and resources that will allow workers to remain in Nebraska.”

“As Nebraska’s industries continue to modernize, it’s critical that workers have access to fast, flexible pathways back into high‑demand careers,” said Commissioner of Labor Katie Thurber.  “This initiative is about meeting people where they are, removing barriers, and helping them return to work with the skills employers need right now.”

The program centers on four key components that streamline the path from job loss to career reentry: rapid engagement, individualized reemployment planning, short‑term intensive training, and expedited job placement.

Core Components

  • Rapid engagement within 30 days of a layoff, supported by NDOL’s expanded Rapid Response services to reach affected workers quickly.
  • Offline, multilingual digital learning tablets that help participants overcome language, technology, and connectivity barriers while accessing essential training content.
  • Individualized employment plans developed in collaboration with career coaches, supported by AI‑enabled labor market tools that help workers identify realistic, high‑demand career opportunities.
  • Short‑term, intensive training programs offered through Nebraska’s community colleges, apprenticeship sponsors, and employer partners, designed to accelerate skill development.
  • Rapid job placement pathways including direct employment, paid on‑the‑job training, and Registered Apprenticeships.

Through this coordinated approach, NDOL aims to reduce unemployment duration, strengthen Nebraska’s workforce, and support both workers and employers navigating economic change.
