Job Seekers
Keep these things in mind:
- Put Your Best "Self" Forward!
- Dress professionally - "be interview ready".
- Bring plenty of resumes (carry in a folder or notebook to keep them looking good).
- Leave children at home.
If you can, find out what employers will be at the Job Fair and do some research on the internet prior to the day of the Fair. If that is not possible, take some time to walk around the Job Fair and make note of the employers you are interested in. Then, visit the booths on your own, rather than with a group of friends - employers want to know that you take the opportunity seriously!
Plan what you are going to say. This is your chance to do a one minute "infommercial". Introduce yourself, have some good questions ready to ask, and be able to relate your background and experience to the positions the recruiter is seeking to fill. Be cautious about asking "what's in it for me" questions! At this point, you want to help the recruiter know how you can become an asset to them.
Gather materials that will help you follow up with employers - ask for a business card, pick up brochures they may have available, and/or ask for a contact name and information. Write a thank you note to the employers with whom you had a conversation. If you talk to several people, be prepared to send multiple thank you notes.
After the Fair, organize your contact information and keep track of employers you have visited - knowing who to call can make all the difference in getting your "Foot" in the door!
