May’s Monthly State Unemployment Rate 2.6 Percent

LINCOLN- The Nebraska Department of Labor (NDOL) announced today that Nebraska’s preliminary unemployment rate for May is 2.6 percent, seasonally adjusted. The jobless rate is up 0.1 percentage points from the April rate of 2.5 percent and down 0.8 percentage points from the May 2014 rate of 3.4 percent.

“Nebraska’s employment numbers were strong again in May as total nonfarm employment topped one million statewide and Omaha’s employment was the highest it’s been since 1990” said Commissioner of Labor John H. Albin. 

Nonfarm employment in May was 1,007,346, up by 4,326 from April.  Private industries with the most growth over the month were mining and construction (up 1,907); trade, transportation and utilities (up 1,387); and leisure and hospitality (up 467). Year over year, the largest increases were in education and health services (up 4,427), financial activities (up 1,765) and other services (up 1,675).

The seasonally-adjusted national unemployment rate for May is 5.5 percent, an increase of 0.1 percentage points from the April rate of 5.4 percent and down 0.8 percentage point from the May 2014 rate of 6.3 percent.

June 2015 data will be published Tuesday, July 21.
